LETTERPRESS ON THE HEIDELBERG WINDMILL

Richard Tautenhahn

Spend a unique Saturday learning the fastest and most productive of all platen presses (and the most complicated): the Heidelberg Windmill. This intensive course with veteran printer Rich Tautenhahn will impart valuable knowledge and skills to beginners and experienced printers alike.

Richard Tautenhahn has over forty years of experience operating Heidelberg Windmills and Cylinders. In 1973, he founded South Bay Printing & Lithograph Co. and ran his shop for 34 years, selling it in 2007. These days Rich works as a letterpress instructor and consultant. Rich was an instructor and consultant (along with Museum Docent Gary Marc Remson) on the movie “Seven Pounds” starrring Will Smith and Rosario Dawson. The movie featured one of the Museum’s Heidelbergs and a C&P treadle press.

Instructor: Rich Tautenhahn
Time: Sunday, August 30, 2009, 9:30-4
Fee: $115
A Windmill manual is required for this class and is $15 (discounted for students)

EXPERIMENTAL LEATHER WORKSHOP

Lucía Farías Villarreal

This intensive workshop will consist of making as many soft-covered exposed bindings as time allows. Instruction to the basic principle of long-stitch binding will be reviewed. Once this principle is understood a variety of patterns can be made. Students are expected to create their own patterns as the class progresses. Creativity will be the limit for making chic books. Access to the hot stamping press will be available as well as stamping foil.  A variety of colors and types of leather will also be available.

Beads, belt buckles, clasps and buttons welcome! Previous bookbinding experience preferred but not required.

Lucía Farías Villearreal received her bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Universidad de Monterrey in Mexico and earned an MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She worked for Jace Graf at Cloverleaf Studio in Austin, Texas. She manages Oveja Verde, her bindery and teaches foundation classes at Universidad de Monterrey. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. She lives and works in Monterrey Mexico.
