Columbian 415 Chappel Prints for Sale

Jack Conway has generously donated a set of Columbian 415 Chappel prints for sale to the general public prior to the Fair. All proceeds will benefit the LA Printers Fair.

About Richard J. Hoffman

As a teacher of the graphic arts starting in 1936 and as director of two college presses, he has been influential in teaching others the art of good printing. Successive promotions brought him eventually to the post of Head of the Journalism and the graphic Arts Department of Los Angeles City College.

In 1959 Mr. Hoffman became Professor of Industrial Arts at Los Angeles State College which became California State University Los Angeles. Richard has had two books honored by the inclusion in the A.I.G.A.’s “Fifty Books of the Year exhibitions, and twenty-seven titles were selected for the Western Books shows through 1977.

In his membership in printing groups and his own writing and teaching, Richard Hoffman has furthered the cause of fine printing in California and elsewhere. His work has not gone unnoticed, since he received numerous awards for his typography.

Richard was a long time member of the Rounce & Coffin Club. He was president of the Los Angeles Club of Printing House Craftsmen and the International Graphic Arts Education Association. In 1961 and again in 1964 Richard Hoffman was presented the Elmer G. Voight Award for “exemplary service in the field of graphic arts education.”

His students have distinguished themselves and, as teachers of graphic arts, are passing on Richard’s ideals and high standards.

Upon his retirement he founded the Columbian 415 Chappel.

The Columbian Chappel 415 was named for the historic press built by George Clymer in 1829 and restored in 1975 by several future Chappel members. The Chappel met regularly at the home of Ruth and Richard Hoffman in Van Nuys, California. A broadside or other printed piece was produced at many of the meetings, often on Hoffman/Urabec hand made paper. The Columbian 415 press was in the library and complete letterpress shop was available in a building behind the house. Many of the members were students of Richard J. Hoffman. Ernest A. Lindner, whose collection formed the museum, was also a member.
