water is one of the essential ingredients of life. waster is life and without water there cannot be life at all. Earth is the only living planet because there is water. The other planets like Mars, Jupiter, Saturn etc are dead because of no water in it. The other planets are deserted and lifeless because they lack water in any forms. The moon is also a planet and it is dead piece of land only because of the water. Presence of water means also the presence resources in the country have been estimated at 45.22 m.ha per year. Of this 6.84 m.ha is for drinking, industrial and other uses leaving 28.28 m.ha. there is often scarcity of drinking water. There are droughts and famines causing untold misery, death and destruction. Water is essential for all human beings like men, animals, and plants. Water exists either in atmosphere in the gaseous form or on the earth in liquid and ice forms.
We all depend for our need of water upon in rivers, fresh water lakes and in the subsoil. This source of water is replenished by the very meager stock of 0.01 per cent mobile water on ground as rains. Thus, the cycle of evaporation and precipitation goes on and on. Oceans and lakes are full of abundant water but it cannot use it directly because it is highly brackish and full of impurities. At present, plenty of villages and towns facing an acute drinking water shortage due to several reasons.
Conservation of soil and water is essential for human survival. Without the conservation of these two natural resources, food production cannot be increased and disasters checked. Already, all the available land for agriculture is being exploited and there is not much scope of further expansion. Nearly one third of the total land area of the world is arid, about 11 percent is under ice-cover and another 10 percent is tundra. Conservation is the need of the hour to ensure continued availability of food-grains, fruits, vegetables and such other supplies. Water is life. It is an essential natural resource needed in homes for drinking, bathing, washing, cooking and in fields and farms for raising crops and keeping animals.
When the land is stripped of its green cover, soil is lost and damaged by erosion. Nearly 26 billion metric tones of topsoil is being eroded every year. It takes from 200 to 1000 years to from 2.5 cm of topsoil under normal agricultural conditions. It is estimated that from 20-300 tonnes per hectare, soil is lost annually.
World work by what we call energy. Energy is a substantial part of every minute particle in our planet. We have to save energy in order to save earth. How can we save energy? Is it by merely not using it? Not at all. God has gifted us with renewable energy resource which we should make use of to save our planet. In our daily life certain act can save huge amount of energy resource. Switching off the lights while going out, making efficient use of cooking gas, switching off vehicle while in traffic, use of solar heater etc are some easy day to day activities that can save energy in huge amount. There is a thesis that if a man does the above said activities for a day, he can use the saved energy for two more days. So let us all save energy and make our earth a safer and sweeter place to live for our future generations
Topsoil is lost many times faster than it can be replaced. The erosion is called the silent theft. A single rain or storm can erode centuries old accumulated soil from a field stripped of plant-cover. Soil is that valuable substance which causes plants and vegetation and plant supporting soil is blown or washed away, the land becomes useless from the agricultural point of view because the sub-soil, underneath it is not potent enough to support plant life. Without this vital cover of topsoil, the land becomes arid, barren and useless. At the present rate of erosion there would be about 30 percent loss of the global soil inventory by the year 2050.
Urgent steps need to be taken to stop this deterioration in our atmosphere and environment. The balance of nature should be restored at the earliest. Some hard and effective decisions are the need of the hour. Something should be done to stop the damage caused to the ozone layer by the discharges from the rockets and airplanes besides the emissions of synthetic chemicals, chlorofluro-carbons, halons and such other substances. The developed countries should immediately phase out the use of these chemicals .With the rapid increase in consumerism and the use of white and brown goods, the demand of appliances that use ozone-depleting substances is growing fast. The cult of owning of refrigerators is spreading fast in the developing and underdeveloped countries.
Even the drinking water being supplied in towns and cities by the civic bodies is not safe. This has directly affected the health of the people. They suffer from many diseases , deformities and illness. The destruction of wholesomeness of our water resources is causing havoc. The encroachment upon lakes, rivers and seas by industries is a serious threat to our environment. Since most of our cities are on the banks of the rivers or the coast of the seas, our rivers and seas have turned murky and polluted with industrial wastes discharged into rivers, lakes and seas from mills and factories have proved fatal to all kinds of marine life. People often fall ill by eating fish etc. taken out of these rivers, lakes and seas and they are often poisoned by industrial wastes pumped into these natural sources of water.
The land under agriculture is 143 Mha, 56 percent of it suffers from varying degrees of degradation. It emphasizes the abuses of our natural resources in the past and even in the present. Conservation is one of the major human problems and must be addressed immediately and effectively. Earth is the only known living planet because of its varied natural resources which support and sustain life. Without these natural resources like water and soil, the earth would have been another dead, desolate and deserted planet like Mars or Jupiter. Water, soil, forests and wildlife are our valuable natural resources and must be preserved at any cost.
Soil conversation is one of the most important inputs of increasing agricultural output. In India many efforts are being made to check soil erosion and the emphasis has been on development of technology for problem identification, formulation and implementation of problem-oriented schemes, enactment of appropriate legislation and constitution of policy coordination bodies. The main objectives of soil and water conservation schemes in the country are ; to minimize process of erosion and land degradation to restore degraded lands; to ensure availability of water and soil moisture; to create micro level irrigation potential through water harvesting; to ensure rebuilding of internal fertility of soil through organic recycle, etc.
